Since 1955, The Fur Vault by Swan Cleaners has been a trusted name in expert fur care, cold storage, restoration, and remodeling throughout Central Ohio. What began as a solution for local fur salons quickly became one of the most respected fur care facilities in the Midwest.
In the 1950s, many furriers in Columbus specialized in selling fine furs but lacked the facilities needed for proper cleaning, repair, and cold storage. Recognizing that need, Swan Cleaners founder Andre Gelpi made the decision to create a state-of-the-art fur care facility unlike anything else in the region. After traveling to New York, Chicago, and other major fur markets to study the industry’s best practices, he worked with architects to design and build what became known as the Columbus Fur Vault at 1140 Dublin Road.
Our facility is considered to be one of the finest fur care operations between New York and Chicago. Designed specifically for professional fur cleaning, preservation, and cold storage, The Fur Vault quickly became the trusted storage location for many local fur salons and their customers.
As word spread, customers began bringing their garments directly to The Fur Vault. One of the unique conveniences offered was the ability to drop off furs at any Swan Cleaners location throughout Columbus for same-day transfer to the vault facility.
Over the decades, The Fur Vault became known not only for storage and care, but also for expert fur remodeling and restoration. Swan Cleaners recruited some of the most talented furriers in the industry, including Carl Bierberg, a classically trained Austrian master furrier known for transforming older garments into stunning modern pieces. His craftsmanship and creativity helped establish The Fur Vault as a destination for custom fur restyling and detailed repairs.
Following Carl’s retirement, master furrier Art Hughes joined the team from the New York fur market and continued the tradition of exceptional craftsmanship. Under his guidance, The Fur Vault expanded into new fur sales and consignment services, offering customers access to beautiful mink, fox, and custom fur garments at exceptional value.
Today, that legacy continues under the expertise of master furrier Rose Spangler. With more than 25 years of experience, Rose is widely recognized throughout Columbus for her craftsmanship, attention to detail, and dedication to preserving and modernizing treasured fur garments.
While styles and trends have evolved over the years, one thing has remained the same: the importance of proper fur care. The Fur Vault continues to provide professional cleaning, expert repairs, remodeling, restoration, and climate-controlled cold storage designed to protect and preserve garments for generations to come.
